Redirection via Javascript or Meta Refresh tag is normally frown upon by Google. However, you can put 301 redirection safely in your site by following the below mentioned step by step process.

For IIS Server:

If you have admin access to the IIS server, follow the steps below:

1. Start Internet Services Manager. Alternatively, start the IIS Snap-in in Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

2. Click to expand * server name, where server name is the name of the server.

3. Right-click either the Web site or the folder that you want to redirect, and then click Properties.

4. Click one of the following tabs that is appropriate to your situation:

• Home Directory
• Virtual Directory
• Directory

5. Under when connecting to this resource, the content should come from, click A redirection to a URL.

6. Type the URL of the destination folder or Web site in the Redirect to box.

For example, to redirect all requests for http://www.mydomain1.com/ to http://www.mydomain2.com, type http://www.mydomain2.com.

7. Click OK.

If you do not have admin access to the IIS server, then we will share about the alternative approach in our next issue.

Till then, keep blogging!

Best wishes,
SEM Times TeamWhizlabshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02554436453211634132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19421460.post-57928707531063006672007-03-11T20:29:00.000+05:302007-03-11T20:33:04.915+05:30SEM Times (Issue 13) - Yahoo Search Marketing is Growing!Dear Reader,

According to SEMPO, search engine marketers spent over 10b US$ in 2006. Majority of this spending is represented by paid advertising. Google Adwords was the most popular and a dominant PPC program. However, over the last few months, Yahoo Search Marketing has been growing and started giving competition to Google.

Although, Google Adwords is expected to remain the leading player for this year as well, advertisers should try Yahoo as well in addition to Google Adwords.

Check out Yahoo Search Marketing UK and Yahoo Search Marketing US to find out how they can bring more customers to your site.

Best wishes,
SEM Times TeamWhizlabshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02554436453211634132noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19421460.post-15164603557410538742007-03-05T21:47:00.000+05:302007-03-05T21:50:53.783+05:30SEM Times (News) - Explanations Added to SEM Quiz Answers!Dear Reader,

We have another update on Search Engine Marketing Times. Forums are beneficial in the following ways:

Communicating with your potential customers - let's say you're selling designer jeans and you've built an online community for that designer label. Need to promote your latest line of designer jeans? Do it through the forums!

Gaining customer intelligence - almost all online communities have forums. At least that's how people communicate with one another. When people communicate, they use messages and it is from these messages that you can get your marketing information - you can know what people like and what people don't like.

Selling advertising space - once you've gotten yourself a thriving community - it's time to generate some side income by selling advertising space on your forums.

Here nothing to lose, only gain!

Keep Participation!

Best wishes,
SEM Times TeamWhizlabshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02554436453211634132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19421460.post-1580017767378986602007-02-20T12:43:00.000+05:302007-02-20T22:10:24.538+05:30SEM Times (Issue 11) - Increase Google PR through BlogsDear Reader,

As we all know that Google PR is dependent on the backward links of the website. To increase PR, many people do directory submission and link campaign to get more and more backward links from high PR pages. Yes, it is the good way to increase the Google PR, but if you want to get good PR and if your website is new, then first submit your website in various directories and create blogs linking to your websites and do blog posting and blog submission. It has been seen that the links from blogs have high weight as compared to links from other sites.

But do remember; never go for link spamming through blogs. It comes under black hat SEO and Google can ban your site.

So, if your website is new then blog submission is the best way to get high PR on its first PR update.

Keep Blogging!

Best wishes,
SEM Times TeamWhizlabshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02554436453211634132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19421460.post-14574021808336493042007-02-17T22:05:00.000+05:302007-02-17T22:16:00.968+05:30SEM Times (News) - SEM Quiz LaunchedDear Reader,

We are pleased to announce the launch of SEM Quiz at SEM Times. AdWords, is a program for Publishers. It allows publishers to display Ads (through Adwords) on their site and in exchange receive the commission from Google. Today, you will find that many sites (owned by Individuals or Organizations) display ads from other sites on their site and thus, use AdSense as a revenue source.

Let me explain the difference in terms of how the money flows in these two programs. In AdWords, an advertiser pays money to Google for every click. In AdSense, Google pays money to the publisher for every click.

An interesting phenomenon which is common today is that site owners are paying to Google for AdWords which brings traffic to their site. These site owners (or publishers) encash on the traffic by having the visitors go out of their site by clicking on the Ads (displayed by AdSense). Effectively, they are making money (at least some of them), as the difference between the AdSense Revenue and the AdWords Cost.

Hope this makes the distinctions clear!

Best wishes,
SEM TimesWhizlabshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02554436453211634132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19421460.post-1140889835005128642006-02-25T23:19:00.000+05:302006-07-17T11:35:09.060+05:30SEM Times (Issue 8): What is Blogging?Dear Reader,

Blogging came first into existence in mid 1990’s.

The term blog is a shortened form of weblog or web log. Authoring a blog, maintaining a blog or adding an article to an existing blog is called "blogging". Individual articles on a blog are called "blog posts," "posts" or "entries". A person who posts these entries is called a "blogger".

Blogs are updated regularly, usually on a daily basis. In other words, "what is the fundamental reason for one site ranked higher than other site?" To understand it, let me give you a real life analogy.

How do you decide the movie to watch or book to buy? Fundamentally, we take such decisions based on the recommendation of others. You decide to go for a particular when a friend, family member or someone else known to you recommends the same. So, your decisions are based on the number of people recommend. Not only, has it depended upon the number of recommendations but also on the quality of recommendation. For e.g. if you best friend recommends a movie then you are more likely to go for such movie then if 5 distant friends of yours recommend the same.

Same principle applies to SEO. But, what is recommendation in the context of websites?

Yes, you've guessed it right! It is the "links to your site from other sites". So, based on the number of links and also the quality of links (i.e. how authoritative those sites are), one site stands to rank better than other. Of course, other factors (like on page optimization) matter but "links from other sites" is the most important factor.

To find the number of links to the home page of your site (on Google), type the following in Google Search Box:
link: http://www.yourdomain.com

For e.g. 'link:http://www.amazon.com' gives 2,610,000 links on Google.

I hope this has been valuable to you. As always, your inputs are highly valuable.

Happy Learning!
SEM TimesWhizlabshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02554436453211634132noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19421460.post-1138454744166347522006-01-28T18:39:00.000+05:302006-06-21T11:12:35.683+05:30SEM Times (Resources 1): SEM Discussion ForumsDear Friends,

Do you know what has changed in the internet space over the last few years? Dictionary.com gives the following meaning of the word “Affiliate”:

To adopt or accept as a member, subordinate associate, or branch

Affiliate Marketing as the name suggests is the way through which your affiliate (or member) does the marketing (brings traffic to your shop). Affiliate refers to another website that has been accepted by you as a member.

How does it work?

1. Affiliate (another site) sends traffic to your site through links, banners etc.
2. Some of these visitors who come to your site take the desired action (buying or subscribing to your product/service). These visitors are being tracked.
3. For each successful transaction (e.g. sale or subscription), you pay your affiliate a pre-decided commission.

It is comparable to “Franchisee Model” in the traditional world. Today, there are lots of tools available which help you set up, launch, promote and track your affiliate program.

Amazon.com is an example of world’s most successful affiliate marketing program. It does significant portion of its business through affiliate marketing. You would have thousands of sites with links to Amazon books. When you go through those links and purchase book(s) on Amazon, the owner of the website gets commission from Amazon.

Your inputs have been highly valuable and encouraging!

Happy Learning,
SEM TimesWhizlabshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02554436453211634132noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19421460.post-1135743151926520772005-12-28T09:39:00.000+05:302007-02-04T04:10:18.163+05:30SEM Times (Issue 5): What is Email Marketing?Dear Reader,

It’s the time to move on to the next topic, called “e-Mail Marketing”. Today, in the world of Internet, email is one of the most powerful tools. In a recent study, it was found that ‘checking and sending emails’ is one of the most popular activities among the internet users worldwide.

Now, the question is how this powerful tool can be used for marketing. In other words, ‘what is email marketing’? If you have been reading the earlier issues, I am sure by now you would know how to derive the meaning of the term ‘email marketing’. Yes, you got it right! Fundamentally, Email Marketing is the technique to drive potential customers/users (i.e. visitors) to your shop (i.e. your website). How does it work?

- You create the database (consisting of email address and other details like name) of potential customers or users of your products/services

- You create the message to be sent to them

- You sent them the mails

- They open the mail and the interested ones come to your site

Although it looks very simple but email marketing involves lots of parameters which determines the success or failure of your effort. Some of these important parameters are listed below:

1. What is the source of your email database? (Is it your own or borrowed from someone else?)
2. Have you taken the permission from the people to send them the mail?
3. What day and time are you sending the mail?
4. What is the subject of your mail?
5. What is the design and content of your mail message?

Please ensure that the email database you use is not bought/exchanged from someone else. It has to be created by you and you should have the permission to send mailers to the people in the list. Also, your message should contain the name and complete of your organization.

There exist different tools to create and send mailers and also to analyze the performance of your campaigns.

Without going into the details of the tools, I would like to complete this complete this topic at this end. I believe that it educates and simplifies ‘eMail Marketing’ for you. As always, you can get further details on this topic by being the user of the Online Marketing industry, or in other words by using ‘Google’.

We will learn Affiliate Marketing in the next issue.

Till then, have a great time and wish you all a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Happy Learning!
SEM TimesWhizlabshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02554436453211634132noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19421460.post-1135173879904947832005-12-21T19:30:00.000+05:302006-05-07T21:05:47.723+05:30SEM Times (Issue 4): What is PPC?Dear Reader,

It is the time to answer the next question: "What is PPC?"

PPC stands for Pay Per Click. It is one of the fastest growing Online Marketing or to be precise Online Advertising techniques. As mentioned earlier, it is an SEM (Search Engine Marketing) strategy.

Through PPC, you drive traffic (i.e. potential customers) to your shop (i.e. your website) by paying to Search Engines. The ads shown at the right column on the Google (when you search for a keyword) are the ones which are part of PPC advertisement on Google. For e.g., if you search for 'hotels in goa'on Google, you will see (atleast shown currently while I am writing this) an ad by www.makemytrip.com. It is also called Google Adwords. Here is how it works:

1. You pay to Search Engines to display your ads
2. You choose the key words for which you want to display your ads
3. When someone searches for the selected keywords, your ad is being shown
4. For each click made on your ad, you pay Google a fee (since you pay when someone clicks, it is called Pay Per Click)

If for a same keyword, there are multiple advertisers, depending upon the amount you bid (to be paid to google for every click) and some other factors like performance of your ad (i.e. how many people who sees your ad clicks), your ad will be ranked from the top to bottom. If the number of advertisers are too many, your ad may be displayed on 2nd or further pages shown on search.

Google can also display your ad on other websites (who’ve subscribed to google) relevant to your topic. You can choose to take advantage of this service as well.

I hope this educates you about PPC. As always, your inputs are welcome and encouraged!

Will talk about eMail Marketing in the next issue.

Happy Learning!
SEM TimesWhizlabshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02554436453211634132noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19421460.post-1134530784095827162005-12-14T08:53:00.000+05:302007-01-13T04:57:50.646+05:30SEM Times (Issue 3): What is SEO?Dear Friend,

Now is the time to talk in detail about different online marketing strategies. It is a process to increase website's ranking for relevant keywords on a Search Engine. For e.g. if you search for 'mp3 songs', mp3shits.com ranks 1st on Google.
